Langkawi, 26th March 2022 – Langkawi UNESCO Global Geopark (LUGGp) did not miss the opportunity to partake in the worldwide celebration of ‘Earth Hour’ campaign on the night of 26th March 2022.

According to Chief Executive Officer of LADA, YBrs. Tuan Nasaruddin bin Abdul Muttalib, the annual ‘Earth Hour’ campaign as organised by The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) aims to encourage communities, individuals, and businesses to turn off non-essential electric lights for one hour from 8.30 to 9.30 p.m. on the last Saturday of March.

“This campaign organised by LADA is innovated through Night Ride Programme that involves Langkawi community setting forth the global theme ‘Shape Our Future’. A total of 200 participants will be joining a 10-km folding bike ride which will begin and end at Maha Tower,” told him to the media during the flag-off.

In line with this celebration, the lights of Maha Tower and its surrounding were turned off for one hour as a symbolic gesture to reduce the use of electricity. Besides that, this action is also necessary to inculcate awareness among the community to appreciate the earth more than they have done, as well as to reduce the excessive use of energy and resources. Indirectly, this programme could also promote Maha Tower as the latest tourism attraction soon to be opened in Langkawi.

Globally, this campaign aims to reduce about five percent of annual carbon dioxide release, therefore helping to curb the global warming phenomenon that has worsened today.

“We hope that this programme could be internalised and participated by various groups to support the LUGGp status obtained by this island. This is part of the many efforts outlined to care for our environment and support the worldwide sustainability agenda, hence fostering awareness on the effects of global climate change.

This programme is also one of the activities that we are organising for LADA’s 32nd anniversary celebration from 15th to 31st March 2022. Everyone is invited to join the Zumba i-Fit 4 Life activity and enjoy a fire performance specially prepared during tonight’s event,” he further added.
