Langkawi, 8th July 2020 – The Langkawi Economic Recovery Action Plan (PTPEL) introduced by Langkawi Development Authority (LADA) last 31st May 2020 is currently being implemented with quick win initiatives to revitalise Langkawi’s tourism development. This conforms with the Tourism Promotion Strategy which focuses on new tourism values that commensurate with new norms being practised throughout the world at present.

Therefore, LADA in collaboration with Langkawi Tourism Academy (LTA) has successfully conducted a course known as Retraining & Upskilling of Langkawi Tourism Frontliners under the segment of Langkawi’s tourism industry development. This programme is scheduled to begin on 6th and held until 16th July 2020 involving participants who are also hotel workers, tourist guides, tourism agents, food preparation workers, and employees from other sectors. It will be organised in a few series, whereby the first leg is already expected to benefit 80 participants who are directly involved in tourism industry. The upskilling offered in this course covers fields such as food preparation, accommodation service, photography basics, and marketing fundamentals.

The coordination of this programme pursues the following objectives:

  • 1. Upskilling tourism industry players in Langkawi to ensure the delivery system and service quality for tourists can be enhanced, feasibly exceeding customers’ expectations;
  • 2. Preparing a platform for Langkawi community who are currently dependent on tourism sector to venture into business domain more actively and industriously;
  • 3. Diversifying sources of income and acting as a method to generate the economy of Langkawi Island; and
  • 4. Preparing skilled human resource to reinvigorate the vivacity of Langkawi’s tourism sector.

Based on Tourism Performance Report 2019 by Tourism Malaysia, the total amount spent by Malaysian tourists reaches RM11,457.1 million or 1.6 percent of gross national income in the same year.

The programme is thus chosen as it focuses on the diversity of food service, aside from being organised upon considering the reception and needs of the industry players themselves. In addition, entrepreneurs engaged in this programme could also seize this opportunity to be directly involved in physical businesses or sales. They will also be able to optimise their service online using digital platforms such as Foodpanda, GrabFood, and more to expand their businesses.

LADA will continue its strategic collaboration with industry players and stakeholders in effort to revive Langkawi’s tourism industry for the best interest of everyone.
