Langkawi, 21st February 2022 – 10,000 mangrove trees will soon be planted on this island by December 2022. This initiative is part of the efforts highlighted in conjunction with World Wetlands Day celebration following its theme “Wetlands Action for People and Nature”.

“Today, 150 mangrove trees from the Rhizophora Apiculata or red mangroves (bakau minyak) species will be planted as a start for LADA in executing the Greening Malaysia Programme: 100 Million Tree-Planting Campaign 2021-2025.”

“Afterwards, we will turn this programme as a weekly geomangrove activity with a target to plant 210 mangrove trees for each session until December 2022. Focus will be given to two identified areas namely the Kubang Badak BioGeotrail and Kilim Karst Geoforest Park. This is part of LADA’s responsibilities to further bolster the management and conservation of Langkawi UNESCO Global Geopark, as well as to educate local community and tourists on the importance of conserving our mother nature,” said YBrs. Tuan Nasaruddin bin Abdul Muttalib, Chief Executive Officer of Langkawi Development Authority (LADA).

In the same statement, he also informed that LADA is currently collaborating with Langsura Geopark Sdn. Bhd. (LGSB), Kubang Badak River Fishermen’s Cooperative Bhd. and Langkawi Kilim Village Community Cooperative Bhd. to introduce new tourism package in line with the intention of Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources (KeTSA) through the launched 1 Tourist 1 Tree (1T1T) initiative.

“This package will be adding values to the readily available ones. Aside from taking a cruise down the river to explore the beauty of nature and various flora and fauna species, tourists will also gain new experience through this mangrove planting activity. Even better, the number of trees planted by tourists will also be recorded in the Greening Malaysia application handled by the Forestry Department of Peninsular Malaysia,” added him.

Meanwhile, LADA will continue the collaborations established with various parties in preserving and protecting the mangrove ecosystem of this island for the good of its nature sustainability.
