Langkawi, 3rd July 2023 – The Langkawi UNESCO Global Geopark is set to undergo revalidation from 30 June until 4 July 2023, as part of its commitment to maintaining its prestigious status. The revalidation process will be conducted by two esteemed evaluators appointed by UNESCO, Professor Dr. Yuanyuan Zheng (Director of the Chinese Geoparks Network, China) and Dr. Yongmun Jeon, a Geologist from the Jeju UNESCO Global Geopark, Korea.

The revalidation of the Langkawi UNESCO Global Geopark (LUGGp) is a significant milestone in ensuring the preservation, conservation, and sustainable development of this remarkable natural heritage site. “Considering Langkawi’s readiness to face the reassessment of LUGGp led by LADA, I firmly believe that we can maintain the Green Card of LUGGp. The retention of the green card and LUGGp status is crucial, as it brings benefits not only to Langkawi but also to the country. Therefore, I urge all government agencies and stakeholders to continue supporting the Langkawigeopark agenda and further enhance sustainability,” said the Chief Minister of Kedah, also serving as the Geopark Advisory Council and Co-Chairman of LADA.

During the revalidation period, Professor Dr. Yuanyuan Zheng and Dr. Yongmun Jeon will thoroughly assess the Langkawi UNESCO Global Geopark based on a comprehensive set of criteria outlined by UNESCO. These criteria include geological diversity, conservation efforts, sustainable tourism practises, education, and community engagement.

“We are ready to face the fourth assessment of LUGGp since 2022. We are excited to showcase Pulau Tuba as a new development in geotourism and introduce the Drive-Thru Recycle Centre (DTRC), an innovative initiative in solid waste management. From 2020 to 2023, Langkawi Geopark has implemented 25 Geopark to School programmes and carried out 31 conservation programmes, demonstrating our dedication to education and environmental preservation. We believe that we can maintain the status of LUGGp as the first UNESCO Global Geopark in Southeast Asia and be recognised as a geopark reference worldwide as we had the privilege of hosting 8 conferences, including the International Geopark Conference, APGN Symposium, and Regional Course on UNESCO Global Geopark,” stated Dato’ Anis Rizana Binti Mohd Zainudin, the Deputy Secretary General of Treasury (Investment), Ministry of Finance Malaysia, who also serves as Co-Chairman of LADA.
The Langkawi UNESCO Global Geopark is a treasure trove of natural wonders, boasting breathtaking landscapes, unique geological formations, and rich biodiversity. Its recognition as a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2007 affirmed its global significance and placed it among the world’s most exceptional geological sites.

The revalidation process serves as an opportunity for the Langkawi UNESCO Global Geopark to showcase its ongoing commitment to conservation, sustainable development, and responsible tourism practises. By meeting the rigorous standards set by UNESCO, the geopark aims to strengthen its position as a premier global destination for nature enthusiasts, researchers, and visitors seeking an unparalleled experience.
The results of the revalidation process will be announced by UNESCO in September 2023 in conjunction with the 10th International Geopark Conference, following the evaluation period. The Langkawi UNESCO Global Geopark eagerly anticipates the outcome and remains dedicated to fulfilling its role as a custodian of the planet’s geological heritage.
