Langkawi, 01 February 2023 – YBrs. Tuan Haji Nasaruddin bin Abdul Muttalib, Chief Executive Officer of the Langkawi Development Authority (LADA) had the opportunity to visit the Hami Melon plantation which has been cultivated by a young agricultural entrepreneur, En. Firdaus bin Jamaludin. This farm is a collaboration between LADA-PLSB which is one of the initiatives under the New Economic Opportunities (PEB) of the Langkawi Economic Roadmap (HELANG) to empower the new economic sector and communities affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in Langkawi.

This Hami Melon plant uses the fertigation method, which is a new farming technology that does not use soil as a medium and instead uses polybags containing coconut coir in a greenhouse that can accommodate up to 700 plants at a time. The Hami Melon plant matures about 75 days before harvesting, with an average weight of up to 4 kilograms per fruit.

This plant has the potential to be developed as an agro-tourism attraction in Langkawi by giving local residents or tourists the opportunity to experience picking fresh Hami Melon fruit from the farm.

The response from residents has been quite positive, and it is hoped that the Hami Melon market can be expanded and that promotions will be carried out from time to time. LADA congratulates En. Firdaus for his efforts and successful achievement so far, and hopefully his agricultural project will be more advanced in the future. It is also hoped that the agriculture and agro-tourism sectors in Langkawi can be further developed for the benefit of the local economy.
