Langkawi, 30th June 2023 – The Langkawi Development Authority (LADA) together with members of the Langkawi UNESCO Global Geopark (LUGGp) advisory team warmly welcomed the arrival of UNESCO assessors, namely Professor Dr. Yuanyuan Zheng (Director, Chinese Geoparks Network) from China and Dr. Yongmun Jeon, a Geologist from Jeju UNESCO Global Geopark, Korea, at Langkawi International Airport.
Also present at this welcoming session were Mr. Wan Kamarul Faisal Bin Wan Kamardin, Deputy Chief Executive Officer (Planning & Development) of LADA, Mr. Ahmad Fuad bin Che Ani @ Abd Ghani, Deputy Chief Executive Officer (Management) of LADA, Prof. Emeritus Dato’ Dr. Ibrahim Komoo, Advisor to LUGGp, Prof. Dr. Che Aziz Ali, Geological Expert of LUGGp, Prof. Dr. Norhayati Ahmad, Biological Expert of LUGGp, Prof. Dato’ Dr. Norzaini Azman, Sociological Expert of LUGGp, Dr. Azmil Munif Mohd Bukhari, Manager of LUGGp and tourism officers from LADA’s Tourism Division.
The assessors were taken to the Ritz Carlton Hotel Langkawi for a briefing session related to the revalidation mission of LUGGp. Representatives from the Langkawi Geopark management presented the tentative program throughout the assessment period, which took place from June 30th to July 4th, 2023.
In the afternoon, the assessors were taken to visit The Datai Hotel Langkawi, which showcased the concept of a zero-waste and sustainable hotel. This initiative was seen as highly significant in reducing its impact on the environment.
